Chapter 34

DI Edwards was with DCI Hudson for over half an hour. During that time, Aggie had done a coffee run to the canteen and surreptitiously handed round the cake tins. A couple of extra DCs had arrived from Vice, and Sara filled them in about the tasks. Noble and Bowen created a list of stolen vans of the correct type. When Edwards finally emerged, Sara could see that Hudson looked a little shell-shocked. Edwards murmured in Bowen’s ear, who promptly left the office with Noble in his wake. Ten minutes later, they were jamming the coffee station behind Aggie’s desk while she took a box of dirty mugs off to wash. That was sorted then.

Sara contacted Tracey Mills. The family liaison officer had already seen Joe Summerhill’s parents and had arranged the visit to the mortuary. Sara would meet them all there. Aggie had obtained the name and address of Taryn’s mother, who lived in the South of France. Tracey agreed to check if she had been contacted and what was happening with her.

Sara began to trawl the internet for images of Hammer horror films. It was deeply frustrating and seemed entirely pointless. There were hundreds to choose from — some even included Taryn’s chair. None showed a victim strapped into it on first inspection. Sara hoped that she wouldn’t have to sit through all the films to see if she could spot it. Even if the image existed, they already knew the provenance of the thing.

Hudson emerged from her office and eyed the two additional DCs from Vice. ‘I had hoped there would be more of you,’ she said. ‘Do you have the list of the Climatic Research Unit staff?’

One of the DCs nodded.

‘Then you can concentrate on them, to begin with. I want appointments made and the statements taken and entered on the system urgently.’ Hudson turned to Edwards. ‘I want you to chase Drugs and find out when we will get the extra staff from there. They should start with the Sainsbury Centre staff.’ Edwards nodded. ‘Images? DS Hirst?’

‘There are hundreds of images available online.’ Sara pointed to her computer screen. ‘None seem similar to the victim’s pose.’

‘Keep looking. Aggie, any news on Taryn’s parents?’

‘Found her mother, ma’am, but no trace of her father.’

‘Tracey Mills, our FLO, has taken that one on,’ said Sara. ‘She’s likely to have to look after the poor woman anyway, so it seemed best.’

Hudson raised her eyebrows as if she was unused to a DS thinking for herself. ‘Vans?’

Bowen stood up and held out sheets of paper. ‘Yet another list. We’ve got dozens of the things now.’

‘Best you start dealing with them, then,’ snapped Hudson. Sara dropped her head forward to hide her smile. She valued Bowen’s input these days, enjoyed working with the grumpy git. But she hadn’t always felt this way. It seemed as though Hudson felt the same as she had on first meeting him. Sara hoped she’d learn differently. On the other hand, Bowen simply stared the DCI out before sitting back down and crossing his arms.
